Let me take you into the realm of science fiction.
A utopian world where poor health is a thing of the past.
Where a universal panacea for all ailments is freely available.
Now think of the real world but imagine if we had a pill that prevented or even treated all of the following diseases, without side-effects;
• Obesity
• Fat deposits
• Diabetes
• Cardiovascular disease
• Heart attack
• Stroke
• Alzheimer's
• Cancer
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Mobility
• Cognition
• Arthritis
• Fractures
• Energy
• Fatigue
• Aging
• Quality of life
It would be worth a fortune and everybody would take it, without question! However, we do have this treatment - it's simple, free of charge and readily available!
Scientists at the British Science Festival 2014 were given a lecture by Dr. James Brown, an expert in aging and lecturer in health science. Dr. Brown had collated the latest research which proves that while 30 minutes brisk walking may not seem much, studies from around the world show that it benefits all-round health.
He stated;
'All of these changes are not seen in people who run marathons, they are not seen in people who lift weights in the gym or spend four hours running on a tread-mill, these are seen in people who walk, and walk for half an hour a day..Maintaining your muscle mass, maintaining your activity level is really important. But there is no need to worry because it has all been sorted. There is a magic new super-pill which will prevent obesity, reduce deposits of bad fat and prevent diabetes. It reduces cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, strokes and delays or reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease. It reduces the risk of some cancers, increases mobility and even treats depression.'
Dr. Brown said that 30% of people with depression who walk for half an hour a day find their symptoms improve. He added; 'It reduces anxiety in about 50% of people and can improve levels of cognition, improving your ability to think and reason. It reduces arthritic pain in about half of all sufferers and can reduce hospital admissions in older women for hip fracture by 40%. It gives you more energy and reduces fatigue levels and if you tie all these things up together into one real subject area, it's quality of life. There is also a 23% lower risk of death. But this isn't a pill, it's exercise!'
Dr. Brown said that muscle tissue releases a hormone that regulates the aging process. It is never too early to start, he said, adding: 'The key thing is to do as much as you can. The message I'm trying to get across is;
IT'S AS SIMPLE AS MOVEMENT.
It's all about getting your heart beating slightly faster, burning up glucose.'
So what is stopping people? They are prepared to spend a fortune on fancy gym memberships but not prepared to go outside if it's raining and go for a little walk.
This message needs shouting from the rooftops. The universal panacea is a reality. For your health's sake, WALK!!
